I have a licentiate and a masters degree in Computer Engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence. Out of a desire to broaden my knowledge in biology, I pursued a doctoral degree in the School of Informatics and Computing at Bloomington, Indiana University (IU). This degree was obtained in partnership with the PhD Program in Computational Biology (PDBC) at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC), and it was possible with a five year scholarship provided by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT). As part of my PhD specialization in complex systems, I wrote my thesis on reverse engineering the mechanisms and the dynamical behavior of complex biochemical pathways. My PhD supervisor was Santiago Schnell, with whom I also worked during my first postdoctoral position in the Department of Physiology at the University of Michigan (UM). Before my position at CSCAR, I held a second postdoctoral position in the Mathematical Biosciences Institute (MBI) at the Ohio State University (OSU).
